Every four-years at the Olympics, on fall Saturdays across college campuses and at tuesday night tee-ball games, we gather. 

Sports have a unique way of bringing us together. They unite. 

And lawmakers love attaching their name to them. 

Today, governments — from the local city council all the way up to the federal level — are picking up the tab for athletics.

But with numerous other issues to tackle, why are many choosing to put public money behind sports?
