"We're getting very close to making a deal. That doesn't mean a deal is made, because it's not, but we're certainly getting a lot closer," Trump said.

President Trump says the U.S. and China are "rounding the turn" on a major new trade deal.

Before his meeting with Chinese Vice Premier Liu He on Thursday, President Trump told reporters an agreement could be announced in several weeks.

"Within the next four weeks, maybe less, maybe more, whatever it takes, something very monumental could be announced," Trump said.

The U.S. and China originally hoped to nail down a deal during Liu's visit this week. But the two sides are still at odds over several key issues.

A source with knowledge of the ongoing negotiations told Newsy one of those issues is the pace at which the U.S. will lift tariffs on China. China wants this to happen quickly, before a summit takes place between the two countries. But the U.S. isn't on board with that timeline.

The trade war between the U.S. and China has gone on for months now. Both countries have slapped tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars of each other's goods since the dispute started.
