The most dangerous place for women around the world is the home, according to a new study.

The study was conducted by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. It found that in 2017, nearly 60 percent of the 87,000 women murdered were "killed by intimate partners or family members," and more than one-third died at the hands of a current or former intimate partner, making the home the most likely place for a woman to be murdered.

Globally, women in Africa were the most at risk of being killed by partners or family members, followed by the Americas, Oceania and Asia. Europe had the lowest rate.

The study ultimately notes there are ways to help combat violence against women. This includes better services and coordination efforts from local police, the criminal justice system, and health and social services. Researchers say men can step up their involvement in tackling this issue by being aware of, and shifting away from, toxic cultural gender-based stereotypes, as well as holding other men accountable for their actions against women.
