Report: Group Plans To Sue HUD, Ben Carson Over Rule Postponement

The Washington Post reports an advocacy group is planning to file a lawsuit against the Department of Housing and Urban Development and its secretary, Ben Carson. The Post says the group is filing over Carson's postponement of an Obama-era rule aimed at desegregating neighborhoods.

The 2015 rule requires more than 1,000 communities getting HUD money to draw up a plan that would address segregation in their housing. HUD said in January it would extend the deadline to submit a plan to 2020.

The lawsuit claims Carson didn't give enough advance notice or enough opportunity for public comment before delaying the deadline to comply, according to The Post.

For its part, HUD says the rule hasn't been effective and communities need more time to comply. It also said too many staff resources are being used to get communities into compliance and that delaying the deadline will reduce the burden on HUD staff.
