Attacks by the Taliban and other insurgent groups are reportedly surging in Afghanistan.

Those are the findings of a new report by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction. It says there were more than 8,200 attacks on coalition forces and civilians in the last three months of 2019, alone.

That marked the most aggressive period for the Taliban since 2010. And overall, attacks rose 6% from 2018. There were 23 U.S. military combat deaths and 192 injuries, the highest annual totals since 2015.

The attacks follow the U.S. conducting the largest number of air attacks since 2013, dropping over 7,000 weapons in Afghanistan last year, according to the U.S. Air Force.

Peace talks between the U.S. and Taliban officials stalled in December after the Taliban attacked a U.S. air base. The State Department said the Taliban needs to commit to a cease-fire before talks continue.
