Rep. Kevin McCarthy will serve as House minority leader in the 116th Congress, jumping from the No. 2 spot in ranking to No. 1.

McCarthy was chosen in a 159-43 vote Wednesday over Rep. Jim Jordan, a leader of the House Freedom Caucus. The current speaker of the House, Paul Ryan, announced in April he would not seek re-election and endorsed McCarthy to take his place.

This comes after the GOP lost control of the House in the midterms.

House Republicans also chose Rep. Steve Scalise to serve as minority whip and Rep. Liz Cheney as the Republican Conference chairwoman.
