A new law in Florida will give paramedics the option of carrying firearms while on the job during situations that are considered "high-risk incidents."

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the measure Friday allowing paramedics to defend themselves or others in scenarios like shootings, hostage situations, drug raids and more.

Florida isn't the first state to pass a law like this. Kansas and Ohio already have emergency responder-firearm laws in place. Bills have also been proposed in Tennessee, Mississippi and Virginia.

Medical professionals who choose to carry firearms will be required to complete firearm safety training and tactical training every year. They will also be required to have an active concealed weapons permit.

The law takes effect July 1.
