Briana KoenemanSeveral Democratic senators have unveiled a new family reunification bill.
On Tuesday, Senators Kamala Harris, Jeff Merkley and Catherine Cortez Masto introduced the Reunite Every Unaccompanied Newborn Infant, Toddler and Other Children Expeditiously Act, also known as the REUNITE Act.
The lawmakers said in a press release the legislation is meant to "immediately reunify all families and establish a permanent system of coordination between agencies and non-governmental organizations to protect detained immigrants with children."
The Trump administration is currently working to reunite more than 2,600 children with their parents after they were separated at the border.
Last month, a judge gave the federal government a July 10 deadline to reunite children under the age of 5 with their parents and a July 26 deadline for children ages 5 and older.
